A power transmission and distribution network of over 10,000 km

We are investing heavily in order to supply electricity to you in a safe and secure manner. Electricity from our energy sources is supplied to you through a power transmission and distribution network that we continuously develop and maintain to ensure maximum stability. Weather conditions are irrelevant – the electricity must be supplied.

Skellefteå Kraft is responsible for the power transmission and distribution network in Skellefteå, Norsjö, Malå and Robertsfors. In addition, we are responsible for parts of the power transmission and distribution network in Vindeln, Arvidsjaur, Piteå and Lycksele. In total, our power transmission and distribution network is 10,897 km long.

We are investing in even better stability

Our power transmission and distribution network does not experience many disruptions and interruptions. That being said, we are investing to ensure that we constantly improve. This includes repairing the older parts of the power transmission and distribution network, simplifying the structure and setting up new it-systems for better surveillance. Furthermore, we ensure that we are always ready to act if an interruption should occur.

This is what we are doing to improve the quality at present:

  • Developing new methods for working with live conductors, which reduces the planned interruptions.
  • Fitting the older parts of the power transmission and distribution network with underground cables and insulated or covered overhead lines.
  • Installing new building components which simplify the network structure and reduce the number of moving components within the facilities.
  • Increasingly using modern IT tools.
  • Investing in research in order to increase the quality of the electricity we provide.

The aim is to gain in-depth knowledge of models and methods for analysing high-frequency interruptions in the low voltage network.

We are always ready to act in the event of a power failure. Our technicians are spread out across our grid area, and someone is always ready to step in, around the clock, every day of the year.
On rare occasions we experience major interruptions. In these situations, we have a special organisation for major interruptions which immediately begins to work. It consists of a jointly trained force of employees who deal with different areas such as customer service, the power transmission and distribution network, and information.

When there are extensive and more severe power failures across the country, which may occur during a major storm, there is a national electricity cooperation organisation which has been prepared by Svensk Energi – Swedenergy and Svenska Kraftnät.

Staff, vehicles and materials are coordinated and sent to the affected parts of the country. Skellefteå Kraft Elnät has been represented by willing staff during the storms Gudrun, Per and Dagmar.

We need your help during power failures

Many people call us during power failures. In order to get the best possible information, we recommend that you first read about current disruptions here on our website or on our app.

If you have important information regarding the power failure, we welcome any tips that may help us to remedy the error. Please call our error report line if, for instance, you have seen a tree that has fallen onto an electrical line.

Over SEK 100 million to fight the forces of the weather

Bad weather threatens our ability to supply electricity to you in a secure manner.  However, we are fighting back and investing SEK 133 million to protect the grid against bad weather. For example, by insulating cables and installing electrical lines underground that have previously ran overhead.

Most of our projects that endeavour to maintain and weatherproof the grid are carried out during the snow-free season. Even though most of the work is done during this period, some parts remain, such as taking down the overhead electricity lines which have been replaced with underground cables; this we do during the autumn or winter that follows. During the following spring or summer when the ground has settled, we restore the ground surface and, for example, lay new lawn.

Trees, branches and other plants that are too close to electricity lines increase the risk of a power failure. Thats why we regularly and preventively clear the areas around our power transmission and distribution network. All this in order to supply electricity to you in a safer manner. In addition, clearing the areas around the grid makes it safer for all of us who spend time in the forest or in the countryside.

Maintenance of the power transmission and distribution network

We continuously work to maintain our power transmission and distribution network in order to ensure that the electricity reaches you in a secure manner. For instance, we are working on making the power transmission and distribution network more secure with regard to varying weather conditions. We are replacing overhead lines with underground cables and exchanging uninsulated overhead lines with insulated lines.

Most of our maintenance is performed during the snow-free season. When the renovations are complete, some work may remain to be finished. During the autumn/winter that follows, we will take down the overhead lines which have been replaced with underground cables. Ground work such as relaying lawns etc. is carried out during the following spring/summer when the ground has settled.
